By India Today Sports Desk: India batter Sanju Samson failed on his return to the Indian ODI team on Saturday, 29 July. Samson, who returned to the Indian team after a gap of 8 months scored just 9 runs off 19 balls in the second ODI match against West Indies.

Samson replaced Virat Kohli in the Indian line-up for the second ODI match in the middle-order as India looked to experiment under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya. Samson had an uncharacteristic slow start to his innings, eating up balls in mildly difficult batting conditions at Barbados. India had been sent to bat first by the Windies captain. Samson did not hit any boundaries in his 19-ball innings and edged the ball into the slips off Yannic Cariah in the 25th over of the match. Samson was India’s 5th batter to depart on the day.

Samson’s downfall came due to his indecisiveness on the backfoot as he dangled his bat against a leg-spinning delivery. India lost back to back wickets in the match, leaving their lower middle-order exposed.

Ishan Kishan was once again the most comfortable looking batter on the day, hitting 55 off 55 balls, alongside Shubman Gill who scored 34 off 49. This was Kishan’s third half century in three innings in the Caribbean tour.

Samson would be ruing his dismissal as the Windies series is being looked as an audition for the ODI World Cup 2023 squad. Samson was one of India’s two key changes for the game after the team had dominated Windies in the first ODI match of the series.

At the time of writing India were 113/5 in 24.1 overs
