WI vs IND: Don’t think Shubman Gill’s form is a concern, says Abhinav Mukund

By India Today Sports Desk: Abhinav Mukund is of the opinion that Shubman Gill’s indifferent form during the West Indies tour shouldn’t be a cause of concern for the Indian team after his string of low scores in the Carribean.

Gill had been in top form since the beginning of 2023, as he had scored hundreds in all formats of the game, including a double hundred in the ODI format. He carried this form into IPL 2023, where he emerged as the winner of the Orange Cap for the most runs in the tournament.

However, Gill’s performance in the West Indies hasn’t matched the expectations set by his previous achievements. He was given a new role of batting at No.3, replacing the experienced Cheteshwar Pujara. This change seemed to pose challenges for the young batter, who struggled to find his form throughout the series.

Gill could only score 45 runs in three innings during the Test series and scored just seven runs in the first ODI against the West Indies. Despite this dip in form, Mukund feels there is nothing to panic about at the moment.

Speaking to JioCinema, Mukund said that it was too early to talk about Gill’s failure during the tour. He also said that it was important not to mix the formats as a viewer and as a fan.

Mukund said that Gill is one of India’s top players in the ODI format and should be a part of the World Cup squad. He concluded by saying that he is sure that the young batter would be back with a bang.

“I think it’s too early to talk about Shubman Gill’s failure because he has had a phenomenal last couple of years. It is important as a viewer and as an Indian cricket fan to not mess up formats. I feel we always tend to mix up formats and we tend to drop here and there, and we tend to associate form concerned with certain formats. The Test format is done with. As far as ODIs are concerned, Shubman Gill is our top player, and I think he should go to the World Cup. I don’t think his form is a concern. I’m sure he’ll be back with a bang,” said Mukund.
