Rahul Dravid defends Shubman Gill amidst indifferent form: Can’t criticize people after every single game

By India Today Sports Desk: India coach Rahul Dravid has defended Shubman Gill amidst his indifferent run during the ongoing West Indies tour.

The year 2023 has been particularly noteworthy for Gill. He started the year in top form, scoring hundreds in all formats, including a double hundred in the ODI format. His exceptional performance continued into the IPL 2023 season, where he emerged as the winner of the Orange Cap for scoring the most runs in the tournament – a whopping 890 runs in 17 matches. This feat solidified his position as a first-choice pick in all three formats of the sport.

However, Gill’s form took an unexpected dip during the West Indies tour. Despite his previous successes, he struggled to find his footing in the Caribbean. The young batter was given a new role of batting at No.3, replacing the experienced Cheteshwar Pujara. This change seemed to pose challenges for Gill, who could only score 45 runs in three innings during the Test series and just seven runs in the first ODI against the West Indies.

In the second ODI loss to the West Indies, Gill had got a start and scored 34 runs but failed to convert it into a big score as the Indian batting lineup crumbled.

Speaking after the defeat, Dravid said he wouldn’t be too concerned about Gill’s indifferent form. The Indian coach defended the young batter by saying players cannot be criticized after every single game.

Dravid said that Gill is an important part of all the three formats of the game for India and hopes the young star will have a good game in Trinidad.

I wouldn’t worry too much about Shubman. He is batting beautifully. He’s playing really well. He looks really good. It can happen. I mean, you can’t criticize people after every single game. These things can happen. It is tough, It’s not easy batting conditions. We needed to grind it out and fight it out there. We probably didn’t do that during the middle overs. But Shubman has been batting well. He is a very important part of all the three formats in the game for us. Hopefully, he will have a good game in Trinidad.
