Mitchell Starc puts injury aside to complete successful Ashes campaign: Not interested in getting scanned

By India Today Sports Desk: Mitchell Starc’s determination and focus on the Ashes 2023 series have seen him push through a shoulder injury, making this campaign his most successful away from home. During the fourth Test at Old Trafford, the Australian fast bowler landed heavily on his shoulder but valiantly continued to bowl despite the pain. He has now repeated this feat at The Oval as Australia aim to win the series.

Despite the injury, Starc remained undeterred and opted not to undergo a scan before the final Test. He emphasised that he would deal with it after the match, stating, “Just a bit of discomfort there, something going on there in the AC [joint]. Nothing major and I’m still able to bowl and do what I need to do.”

The 31-year-old had previously exhibited similar resilience when he bowled with a badly damaged finger tendon during the match against South Africa at the MCG less than a year ago. Unfortunately, that injury caused him to miss the subsequent three Tests. With a few weeks off following the Ashes, Starc may be given some rest ahead of the ODI World Cup preparations.

“I’ve played for over ten years and been through a few niggles and injuries over the time,” he said. “There’s been times when I’ve left the team a man down or other people have. We all push through niggles and whatnot. No difference this week, it’s just a little bit of discomfort and away we go.”

Starc’s performance in the current Ashes series has been outstanding, showcasing his value to the Australian team. He was previously overlooked for the 2019 series, only playing in the Ashes-retaining victory at Old Trafford. However, this time, he has proven his worth, taking a staggering 19 wickets, making him the leading wicket-taker of the series.

Despite admitting that the shoulder problem is not comfortable, Starc expressed that pushing through such challenges is part of the game at the international level. His unwavering commitment to the team’s success has been evident throughout his 10-year career. This dedication has made him an integral part of the Australian bowling attack.

Starc’s performance at The Oval, where he claimed four wickets on the opening day, demonstrated his ability to rise to the occasion even in the face of adversity. With the Ashes series on the line, Starc’s contribution will be crucial in helping Australia secure a victory.
