Ashes 2023: Steve Smith survives run out scare after Jonny Bairstow’s goof up on Day 2 of 5th Test

By India Today Sports Desk: The fifth Ashes Test witnessed a heart-stopping moment at the Kennington Oval in London on Day 2, when Australian batter Steve Smith was almost run out but was saved by a fine stroke of luck. This event transpired when English bowler Jonny Bairstow successfully managed to take the bails off the stumps with the ball still nestled in his hands.

All eyes naturally turned to umpire Nitin Menon to see the final decision. In a display of level-headedness and caution, Menon did not rush to an immediate decision. He took his time, ensuring precise accuracy as the magnitude of the moment commanded. A verdict was finally rendered; the on-field umpire gave Steve Smith not out. Following this, the match continued at its intense pace.

The right-handed Smith was batting on 41 when he got the lifeline and later he went on to score his fifty off 98 balls. He pulled off a thunderous drive to collect a four and reach his half-century. He followed it up with another glorious four through the off side. Smith went on to score 71 runs off 123 balls with six fours before Chris Woakes accounted for his wicket.

As far as Bairstow is concerned, controversy doesn’t seem to be leaving him. In the Lord’s Test that Australia won, Alex Carey ran him out when the batter moved out of his crease without the ball being dead. After the decision was sent upstairs, the third umpire gave Bairstow out.

Australia retained the Ashes after no play was possible on Day 5 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester, leading to a draw. However, the Aussies are yet to secure victory in the series.
