By India Today Sports Desk: England pacer Chris Woakes has defended veteran bowler James Anderson amidst poor returns in Ashes 2023. Anderson, who was dropped for the Leeds Test match – the third one in the ongoing series – has just picked up 4 wickets from three games. Anderson bowled 7 overs on Day 1 of the final Test match at The Oval but was not able to pick any wickets as Australia closed the day at 61/1 after playing out 25 overs in overcast conditions.

Speaking ahead of Day 2’s play, Woakes told Sky Sports that James Anderson’s extremely high standards make him susceptible to criticism.

“We’ve been so used to Jimmy hooping it round corners and sometimes you just don’t swing the ball as much as you’d like,” Woakes said ahead of Friday’s play.

“But I actually felt Jimmy looked really good last night and he just hasn’t had the rewards that he has deserved in this series,” he further added.

Mark Wood and Chris Woakes have been England’s best bowlers since the third Test match, and threatened Australia to yet another loss in the fourth Test match at Manchester. If not for rain, England could possibly have been level with Australia in the series going into the final Test match.

Woakes spoke about the frustration that Anderson might be facing and said that Anderson might still get some wickets in the final Test match of the series.

“Sometimes that naturally brings with it some frustration and you end up trying too hard,” Woakes said.

“But Jimmy is a world class bowler, he will back his experience and come out here today and try to deliver the goods as we know he can,” the pacer concluded.
