Stuart Broad had passion and desire to come back and improve after West Indies tour snub: Michael Atherton


By India Today Sports Desk: Michael Atherton heaped praise on the desire and passion shown by Stuart Broad to bounce from being dropped from the England squad for the tour of West Indies.

In the wake of England’s 4-0 Ashes defeat in Australia, the selectors decided to drop both Broad and Anderson to the amazement of fans, for the West Indies tour in 2022. However, the pacer would comeback strongly alongside Anderson and has retained their spot under the new regime of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum.

Broad has made a significant impact on the Ashes 2023 series. The 37-year-old pacer has picked up 20 wickets so far in series, and has been a part of all five matches.

Broad announced his retirement at the conclusion of the fifth Ashes Test. Broad’s decision to retire came as a surprise to many, but he expressed his desire to finish playing cricket at the very top. He has always had a deep love for the Ashes and the thought of bowling his last ball against Australia filled him with joy.

Atherton paid tribute to Broad ahead of the day’s play on Sunday and praised the pacer’s desire and passion to come back into the side after his snub from the team for the tour of West Indies.

The former England captain also said that Broad has become a nightmare for left-handed batters towards the end of his career.

“Even the great players have to deal with difficult periods in their careers, you’ve got to keep coming back from them. Twelve months ago, he was left out for the tour of the West Indies.

“It would have been easy at that point to say ‘enough, I’m going to go into the commentary box’, but the he had the passion and the desire to come back and improve.”

“Think of how he has improved to left-handers and coming around the wicket. He has become a nightmare to left-handers in the last third of his career.”
